South Lounge | Fordham University - Lincoln Center

The trial mentioned above between two of the leading Yiddish publishers in 1890s New York, presents a case study of the ideological and political debates within the East-European Jewish immigrants in urban America. Understanding these debates is crucial when portraying the emergence of the Yiddish press in New York through the last third of the 19th century. The trial highlights ideological, economic, and religious questions, thus revealing the fundamental principles and motives of each side. The talk will focus on the trial and its background, as well as on its significance for the wider issue of the emerging Yiddish press in the age of American capitalism.
