Alumni Career Workshop: Pivoting to Your Passion

Thinking about turning your hobby into a profession? Curious how you Fordham grads can make a change mid-career? Tune in to an engaging workshop and panel run by Annette McLaughlin, director of the Career Center. Annette will guide attendees through a helpful exercise and moderate a conversation with a pair of Fordham alumni who have made a successful career pivot.

Annette will be joined by Sarah Burns, GSE '13, director of learning at San Diego Workforce Partnership, and Elisa Lyew, MC '07, owner of gluten-free bakery Elisa's Love Bites.

Sarah Burns

Sarah Burns, GSE '13

Sarah has over a decade of combined experience in the fields of education, workforce development, and leadership development. As the Director of Learning at the San Diego Workforce Partnership, Sarah infuses career development best practices into the programs offered by the publicly funded workforce development system and its network of providers. She also designs and delivers professional development for San Diego’s teachers, school leaders and career counselors, drawing upon her experience as a high-school math teacher in New York City. Sarah uses her expertise in labor market research to illuminate present employment needs and future trends in a way especially relevant to K-12 schools, institutes of higher education, and other job-training providers. Sarah leverages her professional practice and degrees in economics and math education to support successful labor market outcomes for San Diegans, with a passion for students and the younger workforce. She is a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, and is skilled in helping individuals and groups to illuminate and amplify their strengths to find success in the world of work.

Elisa Lyew

Elisa Lyew, MC '07

Elisa Lyew was born in Panama and moved to the United States to attend Marymount College of Fordham University, where she earned a degree in theater and media in 2007. She worked for two years in public relations before becoming a pastry chef. In 2014, after stints at several New York City restaurants, she launched her own company online: Elisa’s Love Bites, a gluten-free bakery. Elisa's company now has a brick and mortar location in New York City where she works as chef and CEO.
